Temple, Texas
A national search is underway to attract a collaborative, community-focused police executive to serve as the Chief of Police for the City of Temple, Texas. Located along the I-35 corridor in Central Texas, Temple is one of the state’s fastest-growing communities with an estimated population of 96,000 residents. This is an incredible opportunity to lead a well-regarded police department that has made meaningful progress in strengthening organizational culture, internal trust, and community relationships.
The Chief of Police will oversee a full-service department of 218 employees, including 169 sworn officers and 49 professional staff, supported by an annual operating budget of approximately $29.2 million. The Chief is responsible for providing overall leadership and strategic direction while sustaining a culture rooted in professionalism, service, accountability, and innovation. As Temple continues to grow, the Chief will guide the department through evolving public safety challenges while maintaining strong operational performance and community confidence.
Key priorities include strengthening community trust, advancing data-informed policing, supporting workforce development and wellness, and aligning departmental operations with City leadership and strategic goals. The Chief will work closely with the City Manager, City Council, and community stakeholders to ensure transparent, effective, and responsive public safety services.
The successful candidate will be a visible, approachable leader who values collaboration, ethical leadership, and clear communication. The ideal Chief leads with integrity, sound judgment, and a guardian mindset, inspiring confidence through transparency, consistency, and follow-through while maintaining strong internal systems and accountability.
Candidates should possess at least ten (10) years of progressive law enforcement leadership experience. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is required. A master’s degree and advanced executive leadership training—such as the FBI National Academy or PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) is preferred. Candidates must possess, or be able to obtain, Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) certification within 6 months of employment.
This at-will executive position offers a competitive salary of up to $230,000 annually, dependent on qualifications, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
