Summary
Job Title: Patient Observer - Emergency Department
Location: Carroll Hospital
Schedule: PRN
Job Summary
The Patient Observer provides continuous, close monitoring of patients in the Emergency Department who require behavioral management or protective observation. This role is crucial in ensuring the safety of patients under behavioral distress or who may pose a risk to themselves or others, including those under suicidal precautions, exhibiting suspicious/aggressive/threatening behavior, at risk of elopement, or under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Patient Observers may also be assigned in extraordinary circumstances when routine interventions do not ensure patient safety.
Key Responsibilities
Provide continuous patient observation in a safe, competent, and timely manner.
Follow patient care guidelines and training to perform necessary precautions.
Respond promptly to patient needs, ensuring an environment that maintains dignity and privacy.
Remain in the designated patient room or observation area at all times unless otherwise directed.
Act quickly and efficiently in crisis or emergency situations as assigned by nursing staff.
Collaborate with healthcare team members to assess and evaluate the effectiveness of observations.
Prioritize observational needs based on delegation from RN/LPN and respond accordingly.
Report any significant changes in the patient's condition in a timely manner, based on urgency.
Maintain clear communication with nurses regarding the patient's behavior, condition, and needs.
Qualifications & Requirements
Preferred:
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA preferred)
Experience with medical terminology
Ability to work in a fast-paced and often unpredictable emergency environment
Strong observational and communication skills, with the ability to remain calm under pressure
Ability to maintain patient privacy and dignity in a variety of clinical settings
Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration within a multidisciplinary healthcare team
