Description
Under direct supervision of the Chief of Police, Police Officers perform patrol, traffic enforcement, investigative, and administrative duties related to the protection of life and property. Officers enforce federal, state, and local laws and ordinances; respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service; prepare reports; and assist in maintaining public safety within the City of Silvis.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Patrol assigned areas on foot, bicycle, motorcycle, or in a marked squad vehicle
Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service
Enforce criminal laws and traffic regulations
Conduct criminal and traffic crash investigations
Make arrests, issue citations, and execute warrants
Preserve crime scenes and collect evidence
Prepare accurate and detailed reports
Recover stolen property and testify in court
Assist with criminal investigations, including interviewing witnesses
Transport prisoners to and from court, jail, or other facilities
Participate in community policing and public education programs
Perform undercover or plain-clothes assignments when required
Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
No prior law enforcement experience required
Must successfully complete an approved Police Academy Training Course prior to appointment
Age Requirements
Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment
Applicants over the age of 34 are ineligible pursuant to 65 ILCS 5/10-2.1-6, unless a statutory exception applies
Citizenship
Applicants must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme weather conditions and perform continuous standing, walking, running, climbing, bending, stooping, sitting, reaching, squatting, crawling, and frequent heavy lifting as defined by OSHA Work Practice Guidelines.
Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility register maintained by the Silvis Civil Service Commission. Appointments shall be made from the eligibility list in accordance with Civil Service rules and state law.
